Beyond Tech: Sarika Chawla
The Beyond Tech campaign aims to highlight the extraordinary members of RTC and all that they are outside of being a tech student! As part of our mission to empower our community, we would like to provide a platform to highlight all of the wonderful things that our members do outside of RTC.
“Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine.” ~Alan Turing in The Imitation Game
Q: How has being a [Singer and Writer] impacted your life in a positive way?
A: It has allowed me to tell my stories as a disabled, lesbian, Indian woman. Music and writing have given me more of a voice and a platform and have also allowed me to connect on a deeper level with others.
Q: Does being who you are beyond tech impact your life in tech, or do you keep them separate?
A: It impacts my life in tech because I seek to find ways in which I can merge music and language with tech-related work, such as by using tech to solve relevant problems in these areas.
Q: What are you most proud of as it relates to your life beyond tech?
A: I’m most proud of the stories I tell and the advocacy I do, particularly when it comes to disability rights and awareness.
Q: Is there anything else that you would like to tell us about who you are beyond tech?
A: I’m a paraplegic wheelchair user, and being physically disabled has shaped my worldview for the better. I believe that above all, it’s taught me empathy, a crucial quality which I seek to bring to all that I do, whether it be computer science or creative endeavors.
